Army National Guard Pvt. Gary Griffin

  Army National Guard Pvt. Gary Griffin has graduated from the
Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.  The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.
     During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions.  Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
     The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area.
     Griffin is the son of Nancy L. Griffin of Marshall Ave., Hammond, Ind., and brother of Wesley J. Griffin of S. Parnell St., Chicago, Ill.

Navy Airman Apprentice Dole S. Crego
Navy Airman Apprentice Dole S. Crego, son of Karen D. and Dole S. Crego of Demotte, Ind., recently completed U.S. Navy basic
training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Crego completed a variety of
training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise
gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the
fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior
attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each
recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the
core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.
Crego is a 2007 graduate of Kankakee Valley High School of
Wheatfield, Ind.
Army Staff Sgt. Jason D. Trahan
Army Staff Sgt. Jason D. Trahan  has arrived for duty in Castle Rock, Colo.
     Trahan, a recruiter, is assigned to the Denver Army Recruiting
Battalion, Colo.  The sergeant has served in the military for five years.
     He is the son of David and Bonnie Trahan of Lena Drive, Beaumont, Texas.
     His wife, Ashley, is the daughter of Chris and Kelly Aiken of Andover Drive, Valparaiso, Ind.
     In 2001, Trahan graduated from Hardin-Jefferson High School, Sour Lake, Texas.
Air Force Airman Tony F. Urankar

     Air Force Airman Tony F. Urankar has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
     During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force
mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.
     In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
     He is the son of Tony Urankar of Pennington Place, Valparaiso, Ind. Urankar is a 2007 graduate of Valparaiso High School.

Army Spec. Sarah E. Halik
Army Spec. Sarah E. Halik is currently deployed as a member of Task Force Marne, one of more than 20,000 soldiers from the Fort Stewart, Ga.-based 3rd Infantry Division and elements of the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, Ky.  The soldier is serving a 15-month tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
     With more than 53 patrol bases within their area of operation, the task force has made significant strides in enhancing security in the region.
Since the arrival of the task force more than a year ago, violence in the region has been reduced by more than 75 percent.
     The decrease in violence has allowed the task force to focus on
rebuilding efforts, including local governance and economic development, along with medical treatment missions, providing fresh drinking water and working with local security forces and volunteers to provide a broad blanket of stability to the region.
     Halik is an imagery analyst with the 3rd Infantry Division.  Her home station is Fort Stewart.  She has served in the military for four years.
     She is the daughter of Christine D. Halik of Indiana Ave., Laporte, Ind.
     The specialist graduated in 1999 from Laporte High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 2002 from International Business College, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Army Sgt. William R. Edwards
 Army Sgt. William R.      He is the son of Russell and Kathy Edwards of Painted Leaf Drive, Crown Point, Ind.
     His wife, Esther, is the daughter of Allan T. and Shirleen Peterson of Winchester Ave., Lyons, Ill.
     The sergeant graduated in 1997 from Morton West High School, Berwyn, Ill., and received a bachelor's degree in 2001 from DePaul University, Chicago, Ill.
Army Pvt. Jonathan D. Harrell
Army Pvt. Jonathan D. Harrell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
     During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army
mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
     He is the brother of Toni Harrell of West 52nd Drive, Merrillville,
Ind., and Gracie Austin of Davis Mill Road S., Dallas, Ga.
     Harrell is a 2004 graduate of Roosevelt High School, Gary, Ind.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Anthony P. Pennington
Air Force Airman 1st Class Anthony P. Pennington has graduated from the Air Traffic Control Operations Apprentice Course at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss.
     The course is designed to train students to control enroute and
terminal air traffic by use of visual, radar, and non-radar means at air
traffic control tower facilities.  Students learn aircraft identification
and to initiate and issue air traffic control clearances, instructions and
advisories to ensure the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic operating under instrument and visual flight rule.
     Pennington will be assigned at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.
     He is the son of Paul H. Pennington of Crocus St., and Sandy L.
Pennington, both of Portage, Ind.
     In 2006, the airman graduated from Portage High School.
