Indiana DNR News Release: There are many ways to recycle Christmas trees, but tossing them on a frozen lake to create fish habitat may not be the best idea … and may require a permit from the DNR.

Former Pastor Cites Health Issues

Published reports today say the former pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond cites stress, depression, and other health issues in a new court filing requesting a sentence of less than the mandatory minimum ten year prison sentence. A plea agreement was announced in September, after 55-year-old Jack Schaap was charged in federal court with interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. Man gets 45 years for in Death of his Estranged Wife

A 56 year old man who pleaded guilty last month to murdering his estranged wife at her Portage business was sentenced today to 45 years in prison. The Times reports Frederick Cashner Junior received the minimum time called for in a plea agreement, which does not allow him to appeal the judgment, but that he is eligible to reduce his sentence by more than half. Center Twp Man Gets 4 years for Killing Motorcyclist

A 61 year old Center Township man was sentenced today to four years in prison and four years probation for driving drunk and hitting a motorcycle, which killed the driver. The Times reports David Corbett was driving on a suspended license, coming home from work in Michigan on June 21st, 2011, and had been drinking, before he failed to stop at a stop sign and hit motorcyclist 61 year old Howard Schwartz, of Rockville, on County Road 600 West at Indiana 49 in Morgan Township. Hammond Councilman Hurt in Crash this Morning

In Hammond just before 8-o'clock this morning, just blocks from the police station, Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller tells us a car struck a building, and says the driver was conscious, taken to a local hospital, and they believe a medical condition may be involved. The Times reports the driver was 45 year old Hammond City Councilman Anthony Higgs, and that he appeared ill at the scene.

Armed Robbery at Portage Steak n' Shake

Portage Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred this morning at Steak n' Shake on U.S. Highway 6. Police say both suspects were wearing masks, with one displaying a knife and the other brandishing a handgun. Authorities report the incident took place after 4:30 this morning, and the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money. Man Dies After Falling Through Ice at Wolf Lake

Authorities say a man died after falling through the ice at Wolf Lake in Hammond Wednesday night. Police Chief Brian Miller says the subject, whose identity has not yet been released, was ice skating on Wolf Lake near the old Illiana Yacht Club building, off Wolf Lake near the Indiana Toll Road.  The Hammond Fire Department Dive Team was able to free the man and bring him out, but Chief Miller says he was in the water for at least 20 minutes, and was unable to be resuscitated.

Man Charged with Murder in Death of Estranged Wife

The Lake County Prosecutor's Office has charged Margarito Valdivia with murder, battery with a deadly weapon, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, in relation to the death of his estranged wife Erica Valdivia. Munster Police report they were called to the scene on the eight-hundred block of Boxwood Drive, at 5:45 Tuesday morning, and found Erica's boyfriend standing outside the residence with a large laceration to his head. Investigation Continues into Finer Foods Fire

An investigation continues into the Saturday evening fire at Finer Foods in Newton County. Morocco Fire Chief Corrie Myers says due to the damage from the fire, the State Fire Marshal's Office has been called in. Chief Myers says they were called out just before 8:30pm Saturday, and spent about 15 hours at the scene, located on the five-hundred block of South Polk Street. Myers says no one was injured, and no further information is available at this time.

News Rules for Fingerprinting for Gun Permits

The Porter Co. Sheriff’s Department wants the public to know that as of January 14, 2013 everyone that lives in unincorporated Porter Co., and is applying for a gun permit, must have their fingerprints submitted electronically by L1 Solutions.

Once an applicant applies online with the state they must complete the next two steps in any order within 30 days. Both steps must be completed but it doesn’t matter which is done first.

A Valparaiso Police Officer responding to a vehicle crash involving injuries this morning, at the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Road 49, was herself struck by a westbound vehicle as she proceeded through the intersection to head east. 9 Span Bridge Replacement to Begin Jan 14th

The Indiana Department of Transportation says on January 14th, they plan on closing a section of Indianapolis Boulevard over the Nine-Span Bridge so they can replace it. Spokesman Matt Deitchley says, weather permitting, work will begin that day. Last month, INDOT announced an almost 18-million dollar contract to replace the State Road 152, or Nine-Span Bridge, over the railroad yards, and stated that the section of Indianapolis Boulevard to be closed will remain closed for most of 2013.
