Region Fire Depts Offer Condolences

Region fire departments have been sending their condolences via Facebook this midday after word that two firefighters were shot and killed in Webster, New York, this morning while responding to a fire. Here is more information from ABC:

EC Boy Dies After Being Hit by Train

In East Chicago, authorities say an eight-year-old boy suffered blunt force trauma and died after being struck by a train Saturday afternoon. The Times reports police believe the child, identified by the Lake County Coroners office as Jaylin J.J. Harris, was waiting with other children for an eastbound train to go by at Magoun Avenue and Lewis when he was struck by a train traveling westbound. There were no reports of injuries to anyone else.

Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested in Dyer

In Dyer, a news release from Dyer Police says an off-duty Illinois police officer alerts local authorities to a bank robbery suspect near the TCF Bank counter inside the Jewel/Osco on US 30 shortly before 10-o'clock Sunday morning. Extra Porter Co Patrols Lead to Arrest

Porter County Sheriffs Police say extra patrols in Center and Porter Townships in the wake of thefts from vehicles and home break-ins resulted in the arrest of a 24-year-old Lake Eliza man. Authorities say the man was taken into custody early Saturday in the area of Cherrywood Lane and Split Rail Court in Porter Township for three counts of theft, attempted theft, and resisting law enforcement.

Drunk driving is the probable cause of a head-on crash when a driver going the wrong way slammed into a police car early Friday morning in Crown Point. Sgt. Grant will Help Fund Screenings in LaPorte Co.

The La Porte Hospital Foundation, on behalf of Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital, was awarded a $13,695 grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT).

Through funding from IBCAT, the La Porte Hospital Foundation Breast Cancer Project will assist low-income, uninsured women age 40 and older, and women of any age who are at high risk for breast cancer, to receive screening mammograms through a physician’s referral.

The Munster High School FIRST Robotics Team have been lending a helping hand to a 6-month old kitten named Tapas at the Humane Society Calumet Area. Police Seek Help to Catch Debit Card Thief

Schererville Police is asking for the public's help to identify a suspected thief. The Times reports a man allegedly stole a debit card on December 2nd, at Northwoods Restaurant, located on the 81-hundredth block of Wicker Avenue. Published reports say the debit card was used at several Speedway gas stations, and anyone with information is asked to contact Schererville Police.

Hammond Officer in Stable Condition After Shooting

A 34 year old Hammond Police Officer is in stable condition at last check with non life-threatening injuries after shot three-times in the leg at the scene of a bank robbery this morning. IN State Workers to Get Pay Raises

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has approved pay increases ranging from three to eight percent based on their most recent job performance. The governor's office says about 90-percent of eligible state workers will be receiving raises that become effective in February. Employees who are evaluated as outstanding will receive an 8 percent increase, and Daniels office says about 5-percent are expected to be in this category. The overall average increase is three-point-one percent.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office is reminding Hoosiers to take extra care when using alternative heating sources, such as fireplaces, gas or electric space heaters, wood burning stoves, and other fuel-burning sources, to keep warm this winter. Nwi-dot-com this afternoon reports Lake County police are searching for a suspect in a bank robbery in Winfield shortly before 11-o'clock this morning. The report says a man entered First Midwest Bank on Pike Street, displayed a gun, then fled on foot toward 109th and Randolph, and may have entered a red passenger vehicle near 108th and Park.

In Indianapolis, Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry today announced criminal charges have been filed in the Richmond Hill explosion last month that killed two people, injured twelve others and damaged about ninety homes. INDOT Winter Weather Update – 12/21/12

As of 10:30 a.m. Central Time/11:30 a.m. Eastern time, most of the 170+ plows in INDOT's LaPorte District are on the roads. District-wide we are seeing an excess of blowing and drifting snow due to the high wind gusts. More slick spots are developing, especially on bridges, overpasses, and ramps.
