South Shore Train Delay this Morning

Some train issues are causing delays for passengers this morning. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District reports South Shore Train 106 has been stopped due to mechanical problems. Passengers are being diverted to train 108 at Dune Park Station. Train 108 will be running about 25 min late.

Coroner Seeks Help in Identifying Victims

Lake County Coroner Merrille Frey is seeking your help in identifying and locating the families of several unidentified victims. The Coroner reports her office has exhausted all leads in seeking identification of these victims, and has even been working with a world renowned Forensic Anthropologist who has provided some additional physical characteristics of the victims. Pot Hole Patching Resumes on I-80/94

Yesterday's lake effect snow "affected" pot hole patching work on the Borman (80/94) last night.  According to Matt Dietchley, Media Relations Director of INDOT's LaPorte District, INDOT crews and trucks who would have been patching were instead behind the wheel of some three dozen plows and salt trucks that were dispatched yesterday.  Dietchley says patching work will resume tonight from midnight to about 5 am CST tomorrow morning with the work being down in the two right eastbound lanes of t...

Atwood Mobile Products, a lightweight, durable recreational vehicle components manufacturer based in Elkhart County will invest five-point-nine million dollars to consolidate manufacturing operations, creating up to 132 new jobs by 2015. Valpo gets 1.4 Inches of Snow, None for Chicago

The region got its first taste of winter Monday. Jamie Enderlen with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the snow fall varied from about a tenth of an inch to an inch and a half, with Valparaiso receiving one-point-four inches of snow. Enderlen says Chicago still has not received any any measurable snow, meaning at least a tenth of an inch, for 281 consecutive days as of midnight, which breaks their 18 year record of consecutive days without snow. Portage Police say they are investigating a homicide that occurred just before 6pm Monday. A 23 year old Valparaiso man spent his wedding night in jail instead of with his bride Saturday night. Gary Woman Dies Due to Assault Injuries

A 60 year old Gary woman has died due to her injuries after being assaulted Friday morning on the 19-hundredth block of West 5th Avenue in Gary. The Lake County Coroner's Office reports Dorothy Griffin died due to blunt force trauma, and that her death has been ruled a homicide. Officials from the Lake County Coroner's Office pronounced Griffin dead at Methodist Hospital Southlake in Merrillville, at 4:35 Monday afternoon. Trial Date Set in Portage Arson Case

A trial date of June 3rd has been scheduled for an 18 year old Portage man charged with felony counts of arson and criminal mischief. The Times reports Kyle Feeney, who had pleas of not guilty filed on his behalf today, is accused of allegedly using Molotov cocktails to set a neighbor's car on fire, shortly after midnight on August 30th. Published reports say the arson charge alone carries a sentence of 6 to 20 years in prison.

Crash Kills Gary Woman in Illinois

A 33 year old Gary woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash in Illinois early Saturday near Manteno. The Times reports Randi Jackson was a passenger in a minivan which, for an unknown reason, lost control and struck an abandon pickup on I-57. Published reports say the driver, 28 year old Stephine Cobb, also of Gary, was initially transported to a Kankakee hospital, before being taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence and aggravated driving while license revoked.

Full Day Funding for Kindergarten Increases

State school officials today announced state funding for full day kindergarten increased by $107-point-9 million for the 2012-2013 school year, reaching a total of $189.8 million. The funds will be distributed next week [ December 14 ] to 338 public school corporations and charter schools for more than 79-thousand students who enrolled in full day kindergarten programs this year.

Woman's ID Still Unknown from Griffith Apt Fire

The identity of a woman who died in a fire Friday at an apartment complex in Griffith remains unknown at last check. The Times reports officials are waiting on notification of next of kin for the woman, who was killed in a fire at an apartment building located on the 600th block of North Elmer Street. Published reports say investigators with the Lake County Coroner's Office are working with the Indiana State Fire Marshall's Office regarding the incident.

Liquor Store Robbery in Portage

Police in Portage are investigating the report of a strong-arm robbery in the 54-hundred block of Central Avenue Saturday night. Authorities say a man entered South Shore Liquors and allegedly took money out of a container used for charity donations, then removed money from the cash register. A Porter County officer and K-9 tried to track the suspect, but police say the scent was lost on the north side of Central Avenue between Dombey Road and Hickory Street.
