The Duneland community's Hometown Holiday Celebration begins this afternoon with free horse-drawn carriage rides through downtown Chesterton from 3-5pm, according to the Chesterton/Duneland Chamber of Commerce.  Rides will begin in the Duneland Chamber of Commerce parking lot (220 Broadway), and will be offered to the first 40 guests.  Each ride will last about 10-minutes, and couples will be asked to share rides.  Numbered slips will be given to those lining up beginning at 3pm.  Allyson Bau...

The Hobart Police Department's K-9 Unit on their Facebook page has posted a goodbye to their K-9 Rommel, who passed away Wednesday. Rommel was partnered with Corporal Simon Gresser and the department says K-9 Rommel did a lot for not only Hobart, but Northwest Indiana. La Lumiere School to Acquire Historic Property

In La Porte, La Lumiere School has announced the acquisition of Creekwood Inn in Michigan City as a donation to the school this January . The 30-acre property which is close to Interstate 94 will be known as La Lumiere School, Creekwood Campus. School officials say the home was built in the 1930s by Dr. Lawrence Robrock, and has been operating as the Creekwood Inn under the direction of owner Mary Lou Linnen since 1984. Highland Police Report Burglary

Highland Police say they are investigating a burglary that occurred at approximately 2 am today in the 2300 block of Hart Road. Police say someone entered a residential unit but was confronted by the homeowner and a confrontation occurred. Hoosiers who file individual returns next year will receive a credit of $111 and joint filers will receive a credit of $222 thanks to the state’s automatic taxpayer refund. Indiana Reports 6th Meningitis Death

The Indiana State Department of Health Wednesday reported a sixth death related to a multi-state outbreak of fungal meningitis linked to epidural steroid injections used mostly for back and joint pain. State health officials say the most recent death was someone who didn't live in Indiana. Reports say Indiana now has a total of 56 confirmed cases.

Warm Temps Delay Ice Plaza by a Day

Lake County Park officials say the unseasonalbly warm temperatures in the Region is delaying the opening of Deep River Waterpark Ice Plaza by one day. Dr. Sandra Basala, Superintendent of Visitor Services at Lake County Parks, says the ice plaza will not open Friday as scheduled, but will be open by noon on Saturday November 24. Basala says coils under the concrete allow for freezing layers of water on the Ice Plaza, but the recent warm weather has slowed the process.

A second South Haven home this week has been destroyed by fire. The Times is reporting that fire broke out just before 2 pm Wednesday afternoon in a detached garage in the 300 block of Brook Drive with the fire quickly jumping to the ranch-style house. Gov Daniels Announces Refund Amount

Income taxpayers in Indiana will get 111 dollars next year, paid as a deduction from a Hoosier's 2012 income taxes. Governor Mitch Daniels made the announcement today, saying taxpayers who owe the state will pay less, with those getting a refund receiving a bigger one, that according to an article in today's Times. Published reports say joint income tax filers will receive a 222 dollar automatic taxpayer refund.

Fire officials say a fire at a tattoo businesses in Valparaiso is believed to be accidental in nature. Daniel Lamb, Assistant Fire Chief of the Valparaiso Fire Department, says they were called out just after 11:30 last night, and arrived at the scene, on the 16-hundredth block of Lincolnway, at Suite 160 C, to find fire coming out of the front windows. Man Charged with Felony Child Molestation

Authorities have arrested and charged a Michigan City man with three-counts of felony child molestation. Michigan City Police report a detective was assigned to the case of an alleged molestation of a nine year old boy back in June, and with the assistance of the FBI, new information was gathered and previous allegations of similar instances were reportedly substantiated, and the suspect was charged based on repeated acts of molestation with multiple child victims. Valparaiso Opens 49 Overpass

Motorists can now use the new State Road 49 overpass at Vale Park Road. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 11 this morning, and Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas says they are delighted to have it finished, and that this is something the people can be proud of.
