Thursday, November 8, 2012 – Nestlé USA announced the voluntary recall of limited quantities of Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder in the 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canisters. The voluntary recall is limited to only NESQUIK Chocolate Powder, which was distributed nationally. No other varieties of NESQUIK powder or any sizes or flavors of NESQUIK ready-to-drink are affected by this recall.

Explosion Kills Two in Indianapolis

ABC News reports an explosion Saturday night on the southeast side of Indianapolis has claimed at least two lives, damaged several homes and forced hundreds of people to evacuate the area. Officials still don't know what caused the blast but they wanted to make sure to get people out. One of the residents evacuated said "It was just so big and overwhelming you can't even explain it. So we were just trying to get out of there and that's what we did."

Fatal Accident in Hammond

Hammond Police say a Gary woman died after a three-car crash early Sunday morning that also injured four others, two critically, and the Times reports the case is being submitted to the prosecutors office for review. The crash occurred at 165th and Columbia Avenue, officials say. The Lake County Coroners office says 42-year-old Damita Nicholson of Gary died at Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning.

Fire at Lake Station Compost Facility

Officials say Lake Station fire crews have been at the scene of a fire at the city's compost facility throughout the overnight hours.  One listener tells us smoke from the fire can be seen from Interstate 80/94 this morning not far from Ripley Street.  The site is north of the Borman.   Authorities tell us crews have been on scene since 8pm Sunday.   No injuries are being reported.  We're told the fire is under control.

At last word, police were seeking a fourth suspect in a shooting at Westfield Southlake in Hobart Saturday evening.  The mall was evacuated about 6:30 pm after police say a shot was fired in one of the open areas, with the bullet lodging in a ceiling. There were no injuries reported.  The Times reports three suspects, ages 14, 15 and 16, were taken into custody.  Police tell the Times the shooting happened after two groups of youths got into a fight.

Shooting Closes Mall - No Injuries Reported

The Westlfield Southlake Mall remains closed at this hour after being evacuated due to a shooting earlier this evening. Published reports say an argument between a group of teenagers turned into an altercation.  The Times online is reporting that witnesses overheard some 13-14 year-olds saying there was going to be a fight and as they were walking away the witnesses reportedly suddenly heard gunshots around 6:30 p.m.  According to NBC 5, police have three teenagers in custody along with the weapon used during the shooting inside the mall with a fourth suspect at large.  Reportedly, just one shot was fired which lodged into the ceiling.  No one was injured.  Shortly after the mall was evacuated, the Lake County Mobile Crime Lab, Hobart Police and other departments arrived on the scene, according to the Times.   For the latest on this ongoing region story visit: http://www.nwitimes.com

DNR Driving Tips to Avoid Deer

Fall is peak season for deer-related vehicle accidents and motorists should remember to drive defensively.

“Nearly 50 percent of all vehicle accidents involving white-tailed deer occur between October and December, with November by far the worst month,” said Chad Stewart, deer research biologist for the DNR.

DNR Says Thank You to Vets Sunday

This Sunday is Veteran's Day and to show their appreciation the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is offering something special to veterans and active-duty military personnel. DNR Communications Director Phil Bloom says on Sunday, D-N-R parks, reservoir properties, and state forests will all be open for them free of charge. Bloom says veterans and military personnel should present I.D. or evidence of military service at the entrance gate.

Valpo Man Sentenced in DUI Fatal

A 66 year old Valparaiso man was sentenced to 14 years in prison Friday for killing a road service worker in 2010. The Times reports Jeffery Cleary was convicted on two felony and three misdemeanor drunk driving charges in the death of 63 year old Philip Amsden. Published reports say the verdict came on the 9th day of Cleary's retrial, and that he faced a maximum of 20 years in prison. 8 More Alleged Gang Members Charged

United States Attorney David Capp announced a Third Superseding Indictment charging eight additional individuals alleged to be members of the Imperial Gangsters street gang in a 41 count indictment unsealed today.

Attorney Capp says, "With this indictment we have now charged 23 members of the Imperial Gangsters.  The indictments allege 12 murders and eight attempted murders.  The Imperial Gangsters is an ongoing criminal enterprise and we will continue our efforts until all members are off the streets." 

Capp says that Count 1 charges the eight additional defendants with Conspiracy to Participate in Racketeering Activity and Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute and Distribute Five Kilograms or more of Cocaine and 100 Kilograms or more of Marijuana.  In addition, according to the US Attorney's office, this conspiracy count alleges that the Imperial Gangsters committed these offenses from 2002 to 2012.  Today's indictment alleges five additional homicides that were not alleged in previous indictments, and also alleges four additional attempted homicides that were not previously charged.

The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, FIreamrs, Explosives, the East Chicago Police Deaprtment, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the gary police Department, the Hammond Police Department and the Lake County HIDTA.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney David J. Nozick, according to the Attorney's office.

The United States Attorney's Office emphasized that an indictment is merely an allegation and that all persons charged are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.  If convicted in court, any specific sentence to be imposed will be determined by the judge after a consideration of federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Coroner Reopens Levi Evans Case

The Lake County Coroner's Office says the case of Levi Evans has been reopened. Coroner Merrilee Frey issued a press release today stating the case is being reopened to evaluate the possibility of additional factors that may have contributed to the circumstances of his death. 52 Confirmed IN Cases of Meningitis

The Indiana State Department of Health today confirmed another case of fungal meningitis in Indiana, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 52, with four deaths. Lane Blocked on I65 Ramp to Borman

Traffic-Advisory The ramp connecting northbound I-65 to the westbound Borman Expressway (I-80/94) continues to be partially blocked with an accident involving a semi this morning.  The right lane on the ramp is blocked by the accident itself and crews working the accident scene, while the left lane has been open to traffic slowly getting past.  This has been leading to delays northbound on I-65 starting at around Ridge Road (as of 6:35am).
