A six-vehicle crash in Calumet City left ten people injured, two critically, and traffic was shutdown for several hours. The Times reports the incidents occurred around 1:45 Friday afternoon on Wentworth Avenue, near River Oaks Drive, beginning with a vehicle rear-ending another, which caused a chain-reaction of crashes. The manhunt for a convicted murdered who was accidentally allowed to go free is over. Published reports say 44-year-old Steven Robbins was taken into custody without incident Friday night in Kankakee, Illinois, due to various leads provided to authorities. Sauk Village Man's Death Ruled a Homicide

A 44 year old Sauk Village, Illinois, man was killed after sustaining a gun-shot wound to the chest. The Lake County Coroner's Office reports Brian Brabch was pronounced dead at 4:44 Friday afternoon at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Dyer. The Coroner's Office reports the incident occurred at the home of the deceased, and the death has been ruled a homicide.

The Cedar Lake Fire Department is asking residents to stay off Cedar Lake as the ice is not safe. Chief Todd Wilkening says the weather just has not been cold enough for long enough, which can put the safety of those on the ice at risk, as well as responders who would be called out in case an incident occurs. A man was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital just before 11:30 this morning for a severe injury to his left arm, which had been caught in a conveyor belt. Portage Fire Chief Tom Fieffer says they were dispatched just before 10 this morning to Frick Services, in the eight-hundred block of Sun Drive, at the Port of Indiana, for a report of a man trapped in a fertilizer elevator. Michigan City Man Gets 20 Years for Felony Robbery

A Michigan City man was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for his guilty plea to felony robbery. The LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorney's Office reports Randy Winters admitted that on or about June 24th, of 2011, he knowingly or intentionally took car keys and cigarettes from a man while armed with a gun. Authorities say aggravating factors, like the victim suffering a broken nose in the incident, and Winters extensive criminal history, helped to contribute to the maximum sentence.

Prelim Investigation Indicates Accidental Drowning

DeMotte Police say preliminary investigations by their department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and Jasper County Coroners Office indicate a resident who went missing sometime late this past Sunday night into Monday morning accidentally drowned. Police say 60-year-old Frederick Richart was located Tuesday morning in Tyler Ditch, which runs adjacent to Morning Side Subdivision in DeMotte. The case is still pending toxicology reports.

100 Acres Near MC Available for Development

Officials say about 100 acres of land in northwestern La Porte County are "shovel-ready" and available for continued economic development. Michigan City-based Tonn and Blank Construction purchased the acreage, located just south of the Michigan City Municipal Airport, in late December, and Economic Development Corporation Michigan City, along with the City of Michigan City, coordinated the sale. Driver Facing Charges After Lake County Crash

An early morning crash on I-65 in Lake County shut down southbound lanes for about four hours Indiana State Police at the Lowell Post say a preliminary investigation revealed a 22-year-old Hobart man, whose blood alcohol content allegedly tested .24, three-times the legal limit, rear-ended another vehicle before 61st Avenue, then lost control. A third vehicle stopped, and the driver got out to check on the first driver struck, then a semi jackknifed, and got hung up on the outer shoulder's guard rail. Police say the suspect was treated and released for lacerations to his face and charged with Felony Operating While Intoxicated, Driving While Suspended Prior and was wanted on a warrant for Misdemeanor Battery. The semi was described as a total loss, but the driver was not injured. Police also say the driver of the first vehicle hit was unhurt, and four occupants inside the third passenger vehicle were treated and released.

More than thirty-vehicles --- and three elephants – were amidst a crash scene outside Indianapolis Thursday afternoon that shut down parts of Interstate 70 for as many as nearly eight hours and left at least ten people injured. Accident Shuts Down I65 in Lake County

'Nose Doctor' Malpractice Suit Upheld

The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld another medical malpractice judgment against the former so-called Merrillville “nose doctor”. Mark Weinberger was sentenced last October to seven years in federal prison for health care fraud. Officials say Weinberger fled the country in 2004, and was found on a mountainside in Italy about five years later. He is reported to be incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correction Center in Chicago.

Nurse at Retirement Home Arrest for Theft

A licensed practical nurse is facing several preliminary felony charges after being arrested Tuesday for theft. Indiana State Police, Bremen Post, reports they were notified that a resident of a nursing home in Plymouth had discovered one of their credit cards missing. Authorities then tracked down several purchases made in Plymouth and the surrounding area, and an investigation led them to a 26 year old Lakeville woman. State Police report the woman was also in possession of prescription medication that belonged to another resident of the facility.

The Times reports three masked men with guns forced their way into an elderly man's home in Gary Wednesday evening. Published reports say a boy knocked on the 72 year old man's door, asking for his 15 year old nephew, in the 23-hundred block of Central Avenue, just after 7pm, and shortly after letting the boy in, the three masked men with guns entered.
