Controlled Burn at Hoosier Prairie Today

The Indiana DNR has announced a controlled burn today at Hoosier Prairie Nature Preserve in Lake County.  Motorists are advised to look for restrictions along Main Street and Kennedy Avenue.  Another controlled burn was conducted at Hoosier Prairie November 19; this one is in a different part of the nature preserve.  The burn is expected to take three to four hours to complete, starting at about 11am or noon today.  Here's news release from the Indiana DNR:

Prescribed Fire in Porter Co Today

News Release: National Park Service Fire Managers from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be finishing the Howes Prairie-Lupine Lane prescribed fire today (Thursday Nov 29 2012). Crews initially attempted to conduct the fire on November 15, but were unable to complete the burning due to unfavorable weather conditions. Fire staff expect to start the 180 acre fire at around 10 am, and be burning into the afternoon. Smoke is expected to be visible from Burns Harbor, Porter, Chesterton and I94.

Highland Powerball Ticket Worth $1M

Hoosier Lottery officials say the record-setting Powerball run has come to an end with two jackpot-winning tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri, but two tickets sold in Indiana -- one of those in Northwest Indiana -- are worth one-million dollars.  The jackpot winning tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri will split an estimated jackpot of $587.5 million. BMV Policy Change to Help Veterans

The Indiana BMV this month established a new policy that gives qualified veterans a waiver from from the driver skills test needed for a commercial drivers license. Here's more info:

IL Medical Marijuana Vote Delayed

An attempt to push a medical marijuana bill to a vote in the Illinois House during the veto session will have to wait until next week. Published reports say while the bill passed the Senate in 2010, it had run into opposition from members of the House, but may now have the necessary votes. April Special Election to Replace Jackson Jr.

A special election has been approved by the Illinois House to replace Jesse Jackson Junior in Congress, but the Senate must still approve the bill. The Times reports the House vote was unanimous, and that the election would be held on April 9th. Published reports say Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has scheduled a primary for Jackson's replacement for February 26th, and wants the election on April 9th to coincide with municipal elections to save money, which was approved by the General Assembly,...

Alert Radios for At-Risk Hoosiers

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is again partnering with local emergency management agencies to give away nearly 85-hundred all hazards alert radios to at-risk, economically-disadvantaged Hoosiers throughout the state, including residents of mobile homes, targeted because emergency officials say those structures offer minimal protection against severe weather. Federal grant sources funded the purchase and distribution.

20 Minute Closure on US 30 in Valpo Thurs

The Indiana Department of Transportation says a 20 to 30 minute closure will take place tomorrow on U.S. 30, between Horse Prairie Avenue and Washington Street. INDOT reports the closure there will take place around 10 tomorrow morning, and that traffic will have to be stopped to NIPSCO crews can hang an overhead utility line.

Parking Ban by New Crown Point Library

Parking is no longer allowed on East Street, near the new library in Crown Point, after city officials today decided to declare a portion of it a fire lane. Traffic Restriction on Campbell St Friday

city of valpo The City of Valparaiso says pavement marking removal and repainting will disrupt traffic on Campbell Street this Friday. Officials say the traffic restriction on Campbell Street, from Lincolnway Avenue to Chestnut Street, is scheduled to begin Friday morning at seven and will continue until four that afternoon for the removal and repainting of the double yellow centerline. No detours will be posted.

Wood Burning Stove Changeout Pgm Announced

Northern Indiana Public Service Company has partnered with the American Lung Association and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to offer up to five-thousand-dollars in instant rebates to northern Indiana residents who change out or retrofit their older, high-emissions wood burning boilers, stoves and fireplaces with more efficient appliances. NIPSCO says residents of Lake, Porter, La Porte, Starke, Allen, Elkhart, and St. Joseph counties are eligible.

News Release: Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Fire Management staff will be conducting a prescribed fire in Hobart today (Wednesday Nov 28 2012).  The 178 acre Hobart Prairie Grove prescribed fire will be on the west side of Lake George, just east of Liverpool Rd and south of 49th Avenue, along the Lake County Parks' Oak Savannah Trail. The burn is intended to restore the ecosystem and reduce the number of invasive species of plants in the area.
