Authorities Warning of Scammers Threatening Arrests

Police in Michigan City are warning residents in northwest Indiana of two recent scams circulating. One involves “collection agents” who claim you owe money to companies or on-line companies that you have written a check to in the past that has bounced or has not cleared. Police say the problem is the scammers somehow know you have actually written a check in the past and they threaten you by stating you'll be arrested if you don't pay the check and the fee. The second scam also threatens to arrest you if you don't pay a fine and scammers claim they work for Indiana State Police and have a warrant for your arrest. Authorities say an investigation into these scams of fabricated crime or debt continues, but often turn into a dead end as most of these calls originate from cell phones or call centers all over the U-S and tracking down the con artist is no easy task.
