A legal challenge over a new Porter County map has been taken under advisement by a LaPorte County judge. The attorney representing 2nd District Porter County Councilman Jeremy Rivas filed an amended suit Thursday, contending newly drawn district maps approved late last year violated Rivas' civil rights. The four redrawn districts, all on the ballot this year, removed Rivas from the district he currently represents. A court hearing yesterday looked at a complaint raised by Rivas and four others represented in the lawsuit alleging two districts are no longer contiguous as required by state law. Porter County Commissioners, who approved the new districts, say the newly-drawn lines shrink population differences between the districts, as per state law.
