NORTHWEST INDIANA –Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews are pretreating roads today and prepping equipment ahead of heavy lake effect snow that’s predicted to fall in our Northwestern Indiana District.
Current weather forecasts show snowfall beginning tonight and continuing through tomorrow. A clipper system is expected to bring 1”-2”+ of snow to the entire Northwest Indiana District. But more concerning is the lake effect snow expected to start tonight. Parts of Lake and Porter County could see 12”+ of new snow over the next 24 hours. Surrounding counties could see 6”+ of new snow during that time.
At the height of the storm, snow could fall as quickly as 2”-3” per hour, making it extremely difficult for INDOT crews to stay ahead of the storm. Motorists should expect difficult driving conditions, and should avoid nonessential travel. Always give snow plows room to safely do their work, adjust speed according to weather and road conditions, don’t follow too closely, and brake early and slowly.
INDOT crews will be on the roads 24 hours a day, in alternating 12 hour shifts, as long as necessary to ensure roadway conditions remain as safe as possible during winter weather.
Drivers in Northwest Indiana can monitor road conditions and traffic alerts across the state at any time via the District’s social media channels: www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. Or visit  http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
