NORTHWESTERN LAKE COUNTY, Ind. – More than two feet of lake effect snow in less than 10 hours, white-out conditions, and clogged traffic have hindered Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews from clearing I-80/94, I-65, and other state highways in far northwestern Lake County today. Drivers are asked to avoid nonessential travel in and around these hardest hit areas this evening so INDOT plow/salt crews can efficiently remove snow and ice. Crashes, slide-offs, and traffic backups further hinder INDOT’s snow and ice removal efforts and jeopardize the safety of others.
Traffic was slowed to a crawl or stopped on I-80/94 and I-65 for much of the day as motorists encountered dangerous white-out conditions and snow falling at a rate of 3”+ an hour. As a result of the clogged roadways, INDOT crews and Indiana State Police had difficulty accessing these highways.
INDOT crews have been on the roads in full call-out in the hardest hit areas since last night. They will continue to plow and salt 24 hours a day, in alternating 12 hour shifts, as long as necessary to ensure roadway conditions remain as safe as possible during winter weather.
Drivers in Northwest Indiana can monitor road conditions and traffic alerts across the state at any time via the District’s social media channels: www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. Or visit  http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
