Police continue to investigate a Wednesday morning crash involving a semi that hit the inside barrier wall of westbound 80/94 near the Ripley Street exit, sending two-in-a-half tons of sheet metal across three lanes of traffic.
According to preliminary reports, an unmarked Trooper, who was en route to an accident with his emergency lights activated, saw the semi come up from behind and pass him in the snow and icy road conditions.
Police say the semi, driven by a Hammond man, saw the crash the trooper was headed to and locked up the brakes causing the semi to jack knife into the wall.
Reportedly the semi came to rest about ten yards for the previous crash.
The Hammond man, identified as 39 year-old Juan M. Munoz, was cited for too fast for conditions of the roadway. No injuries were reported.
