Piece of Metal Falls at IU's Assembly Hall

Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass says Tuesday night's Big Ten men's basketball game between Iowa and Indiana at Assembly Hall in Bloomington was postponed as a result of a piece of metal roughly eight feet long by 14 inches wide, weighing about 50 pounds, falling from the ceiling into seats in the lower bowl roughly 6 1/2 hours before gametime. The metal facing fell and damaged seats in the lower part of Section F, in the northwest corner of the building. Both Indiana and Iowa have 72 hours, per Big Ten Conference policy, to reschedule the contest.   Today's (Wednesday's) women's basketball game vs. Michigan will go on as scheduled. Glass said they will be able to handle the expected capacity in the mid-section of Assembly Hall, away from the corners of the building.
Glass said in the four corners of Assembly Hall there is a facing of steel plating that essentially runs from each side up "until the middle at a mild curve, if you will. The preliminary assessment is that with the snow and ice accumulation, it's settled at the lowest point in that curve in such a magnitude that it essentially popped that bottom plate off and there is about an eight-foot by one-foot piece of metal, it weighs about 50 pounds, popped off that facing."
