Indiana state lawmakers are considering a proposal to rename part of US 20 in Lake County, the section known as Fifth Avenue in Gary, for the late Rudy Clay. Gary Democratic Senator Earline Rogers is sponsoring the measure. Clay, who was mayor of Gary from 2006 through 2011, died last June at the age of 77 after battling prostate cancer. In his forty years of public service, Clay was an Indiana State Senator, and County Recorder, County Councilman, and County Commissioner in Lake County before serving as Gary's mayor.
Members of the Senate Homeland Security, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs Committee passed Senate Resolution (SR) 22 on Tuesday.
“Rudy Clay was a trailblazer in his ability to advocate for the needs of those in Gary, Lake County, and the State of Indiana,” said Senator Rogers. “His perseverance and dedication to the people of Gary and his love for the state of Indiana are iconic and deserve recognition.”
The Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus says in addition to serving Indiana in three different levels of government, he was Lake County’s first black Democratic Party Chairman.
“He was a man of wisdom, courage, and tenacity. His goal was always to understand the people he represented and give them a voice in government,” said Senator Rogers.
Senator Rogers represents Indiana Senate District 3 which encompasses portions of Lake County. District 3 communities include Gary, Lake Station, New Chicago, Hobart, Ainsworth, Merrillville and Crown Point.
