An Icy road is the apparent cause of a single vehicle accident overnight that claimed the life of a Valparaiso man and injured a passenger riding in the vehicle.
Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris says shortly after 4:30 Saturday morning his office was dispatched to Joliet Rd. west of County Road 250 West in Valparaiso for a motor vehicle accident.
Harris says the driver, "22 year-old, Michael Malone was pronounced dead at the scene." According to the coroner Malone was apparently heading westbound on Joliet Rd. when he lost control and went into a ditch."
A passenger in the vehilce was taken to a nearby hospital. Harris says that required toxicology tests will be carried out to determine if alcohol or drugs played any role in the accident.
Icy roads continue to be a hazard this morning all across northwest Indiana as roads that became flooded earlier this week have frozen over.
Shortly before 9 a.m. this morning a vehicle versus a pole causing an extrication at State Road 149 and Robbins Rd/ CR 875 north in the South Haven area. Authorities closed both roads for a time this morning.
Another crash blamed on ice overturned at least one vehicle on State Rd. 2 between Clay St. and County Line Road, east of the Lowell exit and truck stops on State Rd. 2.
