Police continue to investigate a fatal crash in La Porte County that took the life of a rural Michigan City man Monday morning.
According to a press release, at 9:35 a.m. CST, deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle accident at US highway 20 and State Rd. 35 near Michigan City. Originally reported as an injury crash, upon arrival deputies discovered that the driver of one of the vehicles was deceased. The La Porte county Coroner's office pronounced the driver, identified as 28 year-old Javier A. Florez, dead at the scene.
Preliminary evidence suggests that Florez was northbound on State Rd. 35 when he entered the intersection and was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling a large steel coil.
The force of the impact sent both vehicles across the median and against the guard rail along the westbound side of US-20. The crash also caused the coil to break free from the trailer, causing lane restrictions on both directions of US 20 while crash clean-up was underway.
It is not known if the truck driver, a 79 year old Michigan man was injured in the accident. Toxicology results are pending.
The La Porte County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Division, La Porte County Emergency Medical Services and Springfield Fire Department.
