Flood Warning Continues for Kankakee River at Shelby

Temperatures have been so cold for so long, mountains of ice floes on frozen rivers in the Midwest are blocking bridges. ABC News reports across the Chicago area, they've now seen more than 60 days this season where they've had temperatures below freezing. That has created ice problems just about everywhere you look. The Kankakee River, just south of Chicago, has huge ice jams there. There was a thaw and that allowed some of the ice to break and it started moving down river. Now there's a huge backup of ice. In one case, a bridge had to be shut down on the Illinois side because there's so much ice.
A Flood Warning continues through midnight March 4th for the Kankakee River at Shelby. As of late this morning, the river there was ice affected and seven-tenths of an inch over flood stage. Minor flooding is occurring, but any ice jam flooding as a result would be very localized, according to the National Weather Service.
