Man Hurt in Snowmobile Crash

In Griffith, a 39-year-old Merrillville man was injured in a snowmobile crash shortly after 6-o'clock Sunday night. Indiana Conservation Officers say the man was operating a snowmobile at a high rate of speed on a local bike trail, before colliding with a three foot berm of snow, and the impact caused him to be ejected from the snowmobile. He and the snowmobile landed approximately 85 feet from where he struck the hard mound of snow, officers say. Authorities say he was transported to Munster Community Hospital where he was being treated for possible broken wrists and a broken leg. Griffith Police and Fire Departments assisted Conservation Officers at the scene. Indiana Conservation officers say it is illegal to operate snowmobiles on the multi-jurisdictional public bike trail.
