A program to provide care for victims of sexual assault has been expanded in northwest Indiana. Franciscan Alliance today announced the program, which was developed in 2002 at Franciscan St. Margaret, has been expanded to its sister hospitals in Crown Point and Michigan City, as well as its Chesterton Health and Emergency Center. Officials report 24 sexual assault nurse examiners have received specialized training to perform forensic examinations and to collect forensic evidence for victims. Franciscan Alliance reports in 2013, their hospitals provided care for 108 adult victims of sexual assault. While the program is currently limited to only adult victims, the hope is to expand it in the near future to include pediatric victims.
