A local teenager was hospitalized after being taken into custody on a South Shore train in Lake County Friday morning. Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation Police Chief Robert Byrd reports shortly before 10 am, passengers alerted the conductor to a person trying to set fire to a train seat with a cigarette lighter. NICTD Transit Police responded to the train that was stopped at the East Chicago station and took a 17-year-old male into custody. Authorities say during the course of the investigation, it was discovered the youth was a missing person sought by the Valparaiso Police Department. Officials say because the youth exhibited signs of impairment he was transported by ambulance to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago where was he under observation. Byrd says pending charges would be referred to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Juvenile Division.
