NWI Skywarn Recruiting Volunteer Storm Spotters

On the heels of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Indiana, Northwest Indiana Skywarn is looking for more eyes to watch the sky.

More trained spotters out in the field will likely mean people will have more notice of any severe weather that is becoming active in their immediate location. But, Carter Garcia, advanced weather spotter and communications liaison for Northwest Indiana Skywarn says his group needs more spotters, especially for huge area they need to cover, "What we try to cover are the four biggest counties here in northwest Indiana, Porter, Lake, Jasper and Newton but we also want to cover Starke and Pulaski."

Garcia says that this is the storm spotter group's first year and that they are, "trying to build it up." He says they have also received their WRN Weather Ready Nation Ambassador certification which allows the group to stay in communication with local Emergency Management Agencies and their warning coordinator with the National Weather Service, according to Garcia.

In an effort to try and recruit more volunteer spotters Garcia says there will be a basic training class to be held Wednesday (March 26th), at 6 pm CDT, at Christopher Center Library at Valparaiso University.   To learn about Northwest Indiana Skywarn the genral public is invited to an open house/meeting 1 pm CDT this Saturday, (March 29th) at the Lakes of the Four Seasons Fire Department, at the bigger south location.
