A Gary man is dead after police say the stolen car he was driving crashed and burst into flames shortly after 11:30 Wednesday morning. Indiana State Police say the man, identified as 26-year-old Nicholas Moore, was pronounced dead at an area hospital from massive trauma. Authorities say Merrillville Police were pursuing the car after it was seen going at a high rate of speed near 56th and Connecticut, but officers lost sight of the vehicle and the chase was called off before the vehicle ran head-on into a tree behind a residence near 37th and Georgia Street in Gary. Reports say afterwards police determined the Mercedes had been taken in a carjacking in Oklahoma last month, and that it also matched the description of a vehicle used in burglaries in Merrillville and Hobart. A passenger reportedly fled, no word on whether that person has been found. [Photo/Indiana State Police]
