Gary PD
In Gary Thursday night, a mother and teenage daughter were taken to an area hospital after police say the woman tried to drive around downed rail crossing gates and the SUV they were in was struck by a train.
Gary Police Corporal Public Information Officer Gabrielle King says it happened at about 10:45 last night, as an eastbound CSX train was approaching Old Hobart Road in the city's Miller neighborhood.  The impact caused the vehicle to spin around until it hit a pole connected to the gate.
Corporal King says the mother and daughter's injuries are believed to be non-life threatening and there were no other injuries reported.
