Officer Cordova and K9 Sabre; Officer Simpson and K9 Rico
The Valparaiso Police Department has added two new K9s to the department. Both dogs were purchased from FM K9 in Elkhart Indiana and both dogs are from Poland. Valparaiso’s newest K9 team member is Officer John Cordova, he recently received a 20 month old German Shepherd named “Sabre”. This is Officer Cordova’s first K9 partner. Officer Jerame Simpson recently retired his first K9 (Cario) and has now received a 2yr old Belgian Malino named “Rico”.
Both officers recently received 8 weeks of training with their K9 partners and both Rico and Sabre are certified through the North America Police Work Dog Association in the areas of narcotic detection, building searches, tracking suspects, article searching and aggression. The new K9s bring the department’s total number of K9s to four . [Photos provided]
There's a fundraiser coming up for Valparaiso Police Department's K9 Division. 5K-9 Guardians of the Night will be a 5K-Run and 1 mile dog walk, held at Central Park in downtown Valparaiso. The 5K run will begin at 6:00 PM and the one mile dog walk at 6:15 PM. Afterwards there will be live music from Chicago’s Libido Funk Circus, a firework show presented by Pet Supplies Plus and refreshments provided by local food vendors.
The cost to register for the run/walk is $20 for ages 13 and older, and $13 for ages 12 and under. All proceeds will directly benefit the Valparaiso K-9 Unit.
Todd Kobitz, coordinator of the department’s K9 program explained, “The Valparaiso police department’s K-9 unit would not be what it is, and as successful as it is, without the communities support. Community members participating in the run, or dog walk, realize that police dogs are a vital part of the department and community,” says Kobitz.
Registration for the event is available online at www.runsignup.com or registration forms are available at the Valparaiso Police Department, located at 355 South Washington Street, Valparaiso, IN 46383. The deadline to register is Sunday, April 20, 2014.
