EMPOWER Porter County today announced the recent selection of Kaye Frataccia as the program manager for their newest initiative: Around the Table, a county-wide program focused on the prevention of substance abuse. Executive Director Heather Harrigan Hitz told the Region News Team Frataccia began her new duties today and has 20 years of middle school teaching experience as well as a wealth of knowledge and experience in many non-profit initiatives throughout Porter County.
Hitz says the initiative is a county-wide, year-long campaign of weekly dining activities and some ideas Frataccia has is creating a monthly menu, working with restaurants and grocery stores to offer discounts and specials and having a weekly “food for thought” column with conversation starts, recipes and topics for families to reference.
Hitz says Frataccia will be supervising and eliciting support through the county to have them help build and run the program.
Around the Table is based on 18 years of studies conducted by the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University which examined the link between the frequency of family dinners, the quality of teens’ relationships with their parents, and the teens’ use and abuse of tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. The Around the Table initiative is a county-wide, year-long campaign of weekly dining activities.
