A truck driver from Illinois was cited on Monday evening after an Indiana State Police trooper conducting a random hazardous material inspection discovered a 55 gallon drum containing a laundry destainer had been punctured. Indiana State Police Lowell Post report the inspection took place at the Valparaiso Toll Plaza, of the Indiana Toll Road, at State Road 49. State Police report the driver was allegedly aware of the leak and had reportedly laid the drum on its side which caused the Hypochlorite Solution, which can cause severe skin burns and eye damage, to further leak out. The Porter County Haz-Mat Team was called in and they repackaged the drum and cleaned up the spill, which caused the right lane and shoulder to be closed for two-and-a-half hours.
