A May 1st press conference is scheduled to kick off the public fund raising campaign to secure funds to restore and renovate the old three-thousand square-foot Canadian National Railroad Depot in Valparaiso, which is anticipated to moved this summer onto the grounds of the Porter County Career and Technical Center. Career and Technical Center Director and Principal Jon Groth, during a recent Region News Makers interview, says a lot of community support has gone into making this happen and the hope is to move the depot on July 7th. He says Canadian National will close the train tracks for eight-hours that day and the depot will be moved across the tracks down to the Career and Technical Center, place it on the tracks there and use students to renovate and restore it, with the interior being transformed into a 21st century learning laboratory.
Groth says as long as enough money can be raised, they hope to install a geothermal heating and air conditioning system so it won't cost the school corporation any money. He says if they can get the Canadian National flagger available, they hope to move the brick pavers around the existing depot on May 3rd to be used as landscaping around the building to allow water to drain through it, as well as have rain barrels and a rain garden between the depot and the tracks.
