The Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was welcomed in St. John this morning. William A. "Bill" Thien was the guest of honor at VFW Post 717 welcome breakfast.
Thien, a Navy and Vietnam vet, was greeted with full military honors, and spoke to the Post about the importance of continuing to raise funds for veterans and their families. Among those attending was US Congressman Pete Visclosky, who applauded the Post for their ongoing efforts and stressed that the VFW is instrumental not only in terms of honoring and protecting veterans but also in terms of raising scholarship money for children in need. Visclosky applauded Thien's life of service and that he wants to leave veterans better off than when he first became Commander-in-Chief of the VFW. Thien will travel to Hobart this afternoon and will also speak to a VFW Post in Michigan City this evening. [Photos/Karl Berner]
