[Mitch Barloga, NIRPC]
As more and more Region residents hit the trails of northwest Indiana, work continues to connect these paths... connecting communities...and the lakefront counties of Lake, Porter and LaPorte. Mitch Barloga, Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) Transportation Planning Manager and Active Transportation Planner, told us during a recent Region Newsmakers interview that trails are legitimate alternate transportation modes. "We try to promote people to get out of their cars and walk and bike more often" he said, noting that many trips a person might take are less than a mile in distance, "and a mile you can cover very easily on a bicycle, and even comfortably walking, as well. So the trails that are being built in northwest Indiana I consider our regional non-motorized superhighways." Barloga says earlier this month, he went out on a trail, covering about six-or-seven miles, traveling through three or four communities.
