One person is dead and two others, a 30-year-old man and 27-year-old woman, are reported to be missing in Lake Michigan.  The Coast Guard suspended the search for two people, Sunday night, in Lake Michigan about 7 miles off shore from the 31st Street Marina in Chicago.  At 9:15 p.m., the Coast Guard suspended the active search for the two missing boaters after searching for a combined total of 43 hours over 1,600 square miles in collaboration with partner agencies. The search party never located the boat involved in the incident nor any debris from the vessel.
Coast Guard rescue crews originally responded to a report of six people in the water, but later confirmed that there were only four people aboard the boat. The original call came from a good Samaritan boater who located and rescued one person wearing a life jacket. Another person was discovered during the search, also wearing a life jacket, and taken to shore. Both rescued boaters were taken to Mercy Hospital by emergency medical services. The female was pronounced dead at the hospital and the male is currently listed in stable condition and is still being treated for symptoms of hypothermia.
The incident causing the four boaters to enter the water reportedly occurred late Saturday night during a voyage from New Buffalo, Michigan, to Burnham Harbor in Chicago.
Rescue crews who participated in the search for the two missing boaters were: Rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Stations Chicago, Calumet Harbor and Wilmette Harbor about 25 and 45-foot response boats, rescue aircrews aboard Dolphin helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan and Air Station Detroit and local rescue crews from Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department aboard both water and air assets.
Also assisting in the search was a search-and-rescue crew aboard a Hercules aircraft from Rescue Coordination Centre, Trenton, Ontario. .  Anyone that may have information that could aid in the search is asked to call 414-747-7190.
