A $10 million Hoosier Lotto jackpot won in Highland in April has been claimed by two limited liability companies, and Indianapolis attorney Matt Carr accepted a ceremonial check on behalf of the two "entities" Wednesday. The winners, a married couple, split the winnings and opted to receive their payout over 30 years. A Hoosier Lotto ticket they purchased at Witham's Sav-A-Stop at 3205 45th Avenue in Highland matched all six numbers in the April 28 Hoosier Lotto drawing. Carr says they've been buying Hoosier Lotto tickets since it began and have been playing those same numbers ever since -- a line of birthday and sports-related numbers chosen by their children years ago. The retailer will receive a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Additional info from the Hoosier Lottery:
Speaking as a representative of the LLCs, Carr indicated his client's love of the Lottery goes back a long way. Carr said his client was inspired by the memory of an uncle who won a Chrysler in the Irish Sweepstakes during the Great Depression. "He said he always figured he had a chance," said Carr.
Carr indicated that his clients are native Hoosiers. Both are retirees. She is a breast cancer survivor with an interest in "furthering the education of children" and "helping autistic children."
The couple plans to purchase a new home and possibly a new car for her.
"He says he is happy with his pickup truck for now," said Carr.
This Hoosier Lotto win marks the second Hoosier Lotto jackpot hit of 2012.
This win is also the latest in a string of million or multi-million dollar wins in Lake County. In March of this year, "Lottery" Louis Namoff of East Chicago won a $1 million Mega Millions® with Megaplier® prize. In June of 2011 Ruby Phillips of Merrilllville claimed a $1 million Powerball® prize. Gary native and Houston resident William Swanson's early Mother's Day visit to Merrillville landed him in the right place and time to snag a $74 million Powerball jackpot in April 2011.
Retired East Chicago steelworker, Peter Gilbert, holds the distinction of winning the largest Hoosier Lotto jackpot in the history of the game, a $54.5 million jackpot won in September of 2007.
