Amateur radio operators from Lake County are joining thousands of other “Radio Hams” in a national exercise this weekend. John Gianotti of Munster says he and other local ham radio operators will be leaving their traditional sites and gathering at the Indiana Dunes State Park from 11am this morning [Saturday] to 11am Sunday for an annual event called “Field Day”. The public is invited to come out this weekend to see what they do and how “ham radio” works. Gianotti says ham radio operators are often the first to provide emergency responders with critical information... and during Hurricane Katrina, for instance, amateur radio operators say ham radio was often the only way people could communicate.
