Area Cooling Centers

Region communities are advising area residents of places to stay cool during the heat wave.

In Gary:
Fire Station #12, 19th and Mississippi St, M-F 9am-3pm, (219) 881-1412
Calumet Township, 1900 W 41st Ave, 24-hours daily as needed, (219) 981-4028
Borman Square Pavilion, 750 Madison St, M-F 9am-2pm, (219) 885-8101

In Portage:
Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Rd
Portage Fire Department Headquarters, 3401 Swanson Rd
If transportation is an issue, residents may go to any City of Portage facility and a ride can be arranged for you through the Portage FD. Residents may also contact the Portage FD headquarters and request a ride to a cooling center at 762-7404.
Cooling Centers will be available from 8am until 8pm.  If residents should require longterm assistance, the city will assist in contacting area organizations geared toward their longterm needs.

In Valparaiso:

Vale Park Enrichment Center at Banta (219-462-1301), 605 Beech St, open Mon-Fri 8:30am-4pm
St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church (219-464-4042), 1511 LaPorte Ave, open every day 8am to 7 pm
Ivy Tech Community College Northwest Valparaiso Campus, 3100 Ivy Tech Drive, (219-464-8514), 7:30am-10pm Mon-Fri, starting June 4-July 29. July 30-August 10, 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Beginning August 13, we would again have extended hours.
In addition, the Valparaiso Police Dept offers a special program for individuals who many need special help during weather emergencies, including times when the heat index exceeds 100 degrees for consecutive days. The Contact Assistance Referral (CARE) Program means the VPD will check on residents during harsh weather. To register yourself or a loved one for CARE, contact Sgt.
