A new community corrections program is a “win-win” for Gary, city residents and non-violent offenders. A three month old program pairs volunteers from Crown Point's Kimbrough Corrections Center with Gary crews to work on nearly 250 miles of badly neglected streets and buildings—although lately, according to an article in http://www.nwitimes.com/ a program spokesperson says, crews have been diverted to cleanup from recent storms. While manpower is nearly doubled at no extra cost to the city, prisoners receive letters of recommendation from the mayor and other officials. The article says Gary residents are grateful for the crews.
