Officials in Gary have marked the start of construction for the Glen Ryan sewer rehabilitation project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was among those represented at Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony. The project will include installing a so-called “French drain system” that uses a trench containing a perforated pipe covered with rock or gravel to collect runoff and alleviate ponding in the street. Officials say the storm sewer system will alleviate street and basement flooding and sewer backup problems for about four-hundred homes. The subdivision is on the far northeast side of the city.
