The pilot of a small plane that crashed en-route to the Gary-Chicago International Airport late this morning was killed. Public Affairs Contact with the FAA, Elizabeth Cory, says the pilot was the only person aboard the plane, that was coming from Smyrna, Tennessee, and crashed around 11:30, in a wooded area south of the airport, behind the Gary Lighthouse Charter School, near 7th and Clark Road. The Lake County Coroner's Office is on the scene, and the National Safety Transportation Board is investigating. No further information is available at this time.
