This is “Fire Prevention Week” and area fire departments are offering tips to residents on what do in the event of a fire in your home. Lieutenant Don Hill, of the Griffith Fire Department, says this year they're wanting people to know two ways out of your home if there is a fire. Hill says knowing and practicing your escape routes, as well as checking the batteries in your home's smoke detectors are both good ideas. According to the C-D-C's Fire and Prevention Fact Sheet, someone died in a fire every 169 minutes, and someone was injured every 30 minutes, on average in the United States in 2010, with smoking being the leading cause of fire-related deaths.
