Starting today, you can no longer fish near the new sea lamprey barrier in Michigan City. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources issued the emergency rule to protect migrating trout and salmon, because as the fish approach the barrier, their numbers become concentrated, and ultimately make them vulnerable to illegal snagging and other forms of poaching. The DNR says prohibits taking or possession of fish within 100 feet upstream of the barrier, and from the barrier downstream to the Pottawatomie Country Club Golf Course property line, located near Springland Avenue. Authorities report the emergency rule can remain in place for up to a year, but that they are seeking to include the closed area in a permanent rule change.
