We hear Wheatfield saw some snow early today... enough to wipe off a windshield... and this just happens to be Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana, as state agencies, like the Indiana Department of Transportation, encourage Hoosiers to be ready for whatever this winter may bring. INDOT spokesman Matt Deitchley says INDOT is thinking about winter long before it starts to get really cold, preparing for the season months in advance. All their snow plow drivers, for instance, regardless of how long they've been driving a plow Deitchley says, go through snow and ice school, a refresher that features a classroom setting and obstacle course.
INDOT's LaPorte District, in northwest Indiana, covers thirteen counties, with over 56-hundred lane miles to plow, with 173 snow plow drivers working twelve-hour shifts, Deitchley says. All motorists are urged to give snow plow drivers plenty of extra space, not just to keep away from the salt, but also for everyone's safety.
