A caucus is set for today [June 3] to choose a new city councilman for Hammond to replace 52-year-old Al Salinas. Authorities say he resigned his second district seat after admitting to a felony bribery charge and misdemeanor tax charge in Hammond Federal Court last month. Indiana law prohibits a convicted felon from holding public office. Democratic precinct committee members will meet to choose the person who'll fill the remaining two years left on his term. State law requires a caucus be held no later than 30 days after the vacancy occurs.
