Sanitary Dispute Brews

It looks like the Griffith Town Council will be going to court over the Hammond Sanitary District decision to cancel longtime contracts with Griffith and two other Region communities for treating wastewater. Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr says Griffith, Whiting and Highland don't pay enough for service in light of the cost of new infrastructure required by the US EPA meant to keep stormwater overflows from going into the Grand Calumet River during heavy rains. The Mayor is quoted as saying nothing will change in the interim, and that he wants to sit down and renegotiate terms of the deal, saying Highland, Griffith and Whiting residents on average pay less than a third what Hammond and Munster residents are charged.
