The La Porte County Sheriff's Office says a car/train crash at a closed crossing in the Union Mills area overnight claimed the life of a La Porte man. Just before 2 am, deputies responded to the Canadian National Railroad crossing on State Road 39 south of US 6. Police say a Dodge Caravan had been struck by a westbound train, and the driver, who was the lone occupant, was found dead inside the van. La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan says 40-year-old Brian Massengill was pronounced dead at the scene.  Police say the crossing had been closed due to construction at the State Road 39 crossing. According to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office, lights and crossing arms were working properly and barricades were in place. Deputies say it appears the driver of the van had driven off the roadway and around a set of barricades that had been across State Road 39. Police say the train crew sounded the horn on the train but the van appeared to be stuck on the rails.
