First District Congressman Pete Visclosky announced on Friday the FAA has awarded federal funds to two northwest Indiana airports. The Griffith-Merillville Airport received almost 411-thousand dollars which will be used to continue the ongoing effort to extend its parallel taxiway. The Michigan City Municipal/Phillips Field Airport received almost 473-thousand dollars which will go towards replacing approximately one-point-five miles of perimeter fencing, supplanting shorter fences with a ten-foot wildlife fence, which is recommended in heavily forested areas to keep the wildlife off the runways.
