Cities, State Eye Federal Monies to Raze Vacant Homes

A proposed program could provide 50-to-70 million dollars in federal funds toward tearing down abandoned homes in Indiana. Last night, representatives from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority held a public forum in Gary as the state explores using the Hardest Hit Fund to demolish blighted and abandoned homes to also stabilize property values in affected communities, and similar hearings are coming up throughout Indiana in coming months. Roughly thirty-percent of Indiana's foreclosed homes are believed to be abandoned --the highest percentage in the country. Gary reportedly has an estimated ten-thousand vacant homes.
