Highland, Ind. (June 27, 2014) — Humane Society Calumet Area (HSCA) will host an adoption event Saturday, July 5 with adoption fees waived for active military and veterans as part of the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

The adoption event takes place from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the shelter located at 421 45th St, Munster, IN. All adoptions require an approved application and all standard adoption procedures apply. The animal does not have to go home at time of application but an application must be submitted the day of the event. Puppies and kittens are excluded, and additional fees—including a $25 rabies vaccination fee—may apply.

Upcoming adoption events take place on July 12 with adoption fees waived for firefighters and their families, and July 19-20 with adoption fees waived for the public, pending a qualifying application.

The 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. As a contestant in the challenge, HSCA is competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

For the challenge, HSCA chose the theme of “Rescue Me.” Throughout the summer at the shelter, HSCA will offer Save Me Saturdays with reduced adoption fees for a special group—including police officers, firefighters, EMTS, doctors, nurses and more—during each event.

The shelter will host two more Empty the Shelter weekends—August 9-10 and August 30-31—with adoption fees waived for qualifying applications.

A list of adoption events and additional information on HSCA’s participation in the 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge can be found on www.hscalumet.org/aspca.asp.

9 Lives for $9 Adoption Promotion

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and the Independent Cat Society is helping to promote this by partnering with Best Friends Animal Network and holding a 9 Lives for $9 Adoption promotion. From Saturday, June 14th through Sunday, June 22nd, the Independent Cat Society will be offering adoptions of cats or kittens, 9 months or older, for only $9 each. During the heart of kitten season, cats over 9 months are left in the background while the tiny balls of fuzz steal the spotlight. This promotion is to remind the public that there are cats of all ages seeking their forever homes all year long! Over 9,000 pets are unnecessarily killed in America's shelters daily simply because they don't have homes. Help us to change that by coming out to the ICS and meeting our many wonderful cats and kittens who are seeking a forever home and making one or two a part of your family. During this promotion only, we will be adding additional adoption hours. Along with our regular hours of Saturdays 10am - 4pm and Sundays 1pm - 4pm, we will be open June 16th through the 20th, 12pm - 3pm and 4pm - 7pm.  Our shelter is located at Rte 6 and County Line Road in Westville, Indiana. Hope to see you there!!
