International Homeless Animals' Day August 18, 2012:

The Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry, Lakeshore Paws, and CPR Fund Rescue and Adoption are hosting an awareness day for homeless animals. Join us from 4:00 pm to dusk August 18, 2012, at Countryside Park 5250 US HWY 6 Portage, Indiana for International Homeless Animals’ Day.

International Homeless Animals’ Day was initiated by the International Society for Animal Rights 21 years ago. Its purpose is to shed light on the tragedy of pet overpopulation and the urgent need for affordable spay/neuter programs to help save the lives of animals.

The Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry, Lakeshore Paws, and CPR Fund Rescue and Adoption will host the first local observation of International Homeless Animals’ Day in order to send the spay/neuter message to a local audience in an effort to halt the euthanasia and suffering of unwanted companion animals.

The observance will be about awareness, but it will also focus on the challenge of our local animal welfare community as it works together toward a common goal. The event will begin at 4:00 pm and continue until dusk, ending with a candlelight vigil that will memorialize the animals who've lost their lives and to offer a tribute to the many selfless people who devote their lives to the overwhelming flood of homeless animals.

Nearly 100 local children from Liberty Elementary, Jones Elementary and Aylesworth schools have shared original art depicting their connection with pets. These pieces, arranged on colorful poster board, will line the path to the vigil. Additional highlights include:

 Candlelight vigil

 Blessing of the pets

 Pet costume contest

 Guest speakers from local shelters, rescue groups, and The Humane Society United States

 Pet photography

 ID tag booth

 Animal Rescue and adoption organizations, which will share their success stories and have adoptable animals looking for homes!

Free entry and parking --
This 33-acre park is located in the southwestern part of the city along U.S. 6, just east of County Line Road. Countryside Park is most recognized as the home of the Portage Historical Society and the Al Goin Historical Museum.
