"Tree Decorating Naturally" will be held at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve on Saturday, December 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a free program but please call to register at 219-844-3188. Individual sign ups only (no groups)
Decorating the Gibson Woods holiday tree with “natural” ornaments has been a tradition for many years. Stop by the Environmental Awareness Center anytime between 1 and 3 to take part in this annual gathering. Many unique decorations can be made out of simple items found in nature. Acorns, pinecones, seedpods, and other dried materials will be available and you are welcome to bring your own to share. Make an ornament for the Gibson Woods tree and another to take home. Enjoy holiday music and stop by the “Bird Room” to see who’s visiting the feeders.
Valparaiso, IN – Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is hosting a nine-day wilderness survival course beginning January 31, 2014.
This Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is a comprehensive 80-hour course that teaches about environmental emergencies and survival skills, response and assessment, musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries, and CPR and other medical emergency techniques. Student skills and knowledge will be developed in hands-on outdoor and indoor practicums. In order for students to receive their certification, they must pass ongoing practical skills evaluation and a written final exam. The WFR certification is good for three years.
This WFR course is recognized as the industry standard certification by backcountry trip leaders, camp counselors, mountain guides, river guides and ski patrollers. Potentially, emergency response personnel, such as EMTs and firefighters, can apply this training toward needed continuing education credits.
“This wilderness medical training certification is perfect for safety laymen and professionals that want to enhance their outdoor skills.” said Alexis R. Faust, President and CEO of Taltree Arboretum & Gardens. “It will provide a high level of wilderness medical training for any outdoor enthusiast.”
This nine-day course runs Friday, January 31 to Saturday, February 8. Class size is limited to 30 people. Course cost is $650 per person. Primitive overnight accommodations are available at the additional cost of $135.
This is the only opportunity to take this course in the Chicago-Northwest Indiana area. The program is provided in partnership with SOLO Wilderness Medical School of Conway, New Hampshire.
