CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is warning truckers and other motorists of a high wind advisory issued by the National Weather Service for the Chicago area and much of northern Illinois. The advisory warns of potentially hazardous driving conditions overnight tonight as a result of high winds spawned by Hurricane Sandy.
According to the Weather Service, sustained winds speeds between 30 and 39 miles per hour are expected between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., with gusts between 45 and 57 miles per hour. Higher wind gusts are expected near the lake.
The Weather service warned that downed tree limbs and power lines are likely, and it said that “driving may be difficult, especially in high profile vehicles. Motorists should be alert and use caution.”
The Weather Service has also issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning for areas along Lake Michigan, with wave heights reaching 18 to 23 feet along the Lake Michigan shoreline by Tuesday.
