Sandy Delays Dredging

In East Chicago, there's been no dredging of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal since 1972 – and thanks to Hurricane Sandy, the work will wait a little longer. A ribbon-cutting was held as scheduled Monday morning at the confined disposal facility at Indianapolis Boulevard and Riley Road, but today's Times reports that the actual start to the removal of contaminated sediment will wait until the winds settle down. The US Army Corps of Engineers will be taking out millions of cubic yards of polluted sediment from the waterway.
